From STT to Cruz Bay by ferry, a Painkiller at the harbor, an afternoon between Francis and Maho, and sunset cocktails before dinner at Morgan's Mango.

St. John in a Day: Arrival, Beaches, and a Cruz Bay Sunset — preview
The shape of an arrival day on St. John is built around the water, the ferry, and the early sunset. STT in the morning, Cruz Bay by lunch, two North Shore beaches in the afternoon, and a sunset cocktail before the light gives out. Pace it slow — the island rewards it.
Arrival — Fly into St. Thomas (STT)
Two routine ways across to St. John. With a rental car, drive 35–40 min from STT to Red Hook and load onto the car ferry — runs about every two hours daytime, line up early. Without a car, take a taxi to Red Hook (~45 min) and catch the passenger ferry into Cruz Bay (roughly hourly in peak daytime).
Mid-morning — Check in at The Hills, Cruz Bay
A boutique hillside retreat perched above the harbor. Private villa-style suites, infinity pools, harbor views. Tucked away but minutes from town on foot.
Lunch — The Beach Bar, Cruz Bay
The soft landing after travel. Barefoot, open-air, frozen Painkillers, live music, harbor in front of you. Island mode begins here.
Afternoon — Francis Bay
Inside Virgin Islands National Park. Calm, shallow water, easy sand entry. Sea turtles are routine, snorkel conditions forgiving. Quieter than Trunk Bay — the right way to start the beach side of the day.
Late afternoon — Maho Bay
The long, lazy stop. Turtles graze offshore, water stays swimmable for hours. Beach bars and food trucks across the road at Maho Crossroads; paddleboards and snorkel gear to rent if you want them.
Sunset — Back to The Hills, then a drink
Up to the room, outdoor shower, change. Back down into Cruz Bay for sunset at Drink — frozen specialty cocktails, open-air, direct harbor sunset views. Arrive 30–45 min before actual sunset; the light goes fast here year-round.
7:00 PM — Dinner at Morgan's Mango
Caribbean fusion in an open-air courtyard. Fresh seafood, grilled meats, island spices, strong cocktails, busy energy. Service starts at 5:30 PM, so a 7 PM table lands the second seating with the right atmosphere.
10:00 PM — Nightcap at Woody's Seafood Saloon
Cruz Bay's legendary dive. Cheap drinks, late-night seafood, no-frills island energy. The real St. John ending — casual, loud, local.
Island rule: sunsets come early year-round. Build the evening around the light, not the clock.
Day 2 — The North Shore at sunrise
Day two heads east along the North Shore Road before the boats arrive — Trunk Bay's underwater snorkel trail at opening, a slow swim at Cinnamon, and the half-day sail from Cruz Bay across to Norman Island in the afternoon.
