Piedmont in a Day: Barolo, Roero, and a Vineyard Overnight
Milan to the Langhe to Roero — a small Barolo cellar, the Belvedere at La Morra, a vineyard-facing lunch, an Arneis tasting at Malvirà, and dinner at Villa Tiboldi as the sun goes down.

Piedmont in a Day: Barolo, Roero, and a Vineyard Overnight — preview
The shape of a perfect day in Piedmont is built around lunch. Land in Milan, drive south into the Langhe, taste at a small family cellar before midday, eat slowly at a vineyard-facing terrace, cross east into Roero for an afternoon Arneis, then end at a vineyard estate where the day finally slows.
Morning — Fly into Milan, drive into the Langhe
Land at Malpensa or Linate, pick up the rental, head south. Milan flattens into open countryside, then vineyard-covered hills rise on either side and medieval hilltop villages appear on the horizon. About 1h45–2h to the Langhe.
Mid-morning — Cascina SOT (Barolo / La Morra)
A small, family-run winery rooted in traditional Barolo production. Host-led tasting, deep focus on Nebbiolo, and storytelling about the UNESCO-protected vineyard landscape. About 1.5–2 hours.
12:30 PM — La Morra, the Belvedere
Park near Piazza Martiri in the town center. Walk uphill through the old streets and follow the signs for Belvedere / Panorama. The vineyard landscape of the Langhe opens below — hilltop villages scattered across rolling hills, the Alps on the horizon on a clear day. The most photographed point in the Barolo region.
Lunch — Osteria Veglio
Vineyard-facing terrace, refined but traditional Piedmont cuisine, a strong regional wine list. The kind of midday meal that decides the shape of the afternoon.
Afternoon — Drive east into Roero
Continue east into Roero — softer sandy soils, lighter and more aromatic wines, quieter villages. About 35–45 minutes.
Late afternoon — Malvirà (Canale)
A refined, family-run Roero estate known for elegance and balance. Guided cellar visit and a structured tasting — Arneis (Roero's fresh, aromatic white) and the elegant reds that follow. About 1.5 hours.
Sunset — Villa Tiboldi
A vineyard estate above the Roero hills, on the Malvirà property. Settle in, slow the pace, take the golden hour from the terrace.
Dinner at Villa Tiboldi
Seasonal Piedmont cuisine — tajarin, agnolotti, slow-braised meats. Estate wines from Malvirà, sunset over the vines, the kind of quiet that makes you start asking about a second night.
Overnight — vineyards and silence
A glass of Roero in hand. Full immersion. The day did its work.
Piedmont rule: lunch is the structure of the day. Plan around it, not against it.
Day 2 — Alba and the Barbaresco hills
Day two starts with the Alba market — truffles if the season's right, hazelnut paste and Piedmont produce otherwise. Then back-roads into Barbaresco for a tighter, harder-edged tasting and a long cellar lunch in Treiso.
